What won't junk removal take?

Household hazardous waste, or HHW, is anything that can't legally go into a standard junk truck. The common items found in garages and sheds across LA include:

• Leftover paint and paint thinner
• Used motor oil and automotive fluids
• Solvents and cleaning chemicals
• Pesticides and herbicides
• Pool chemicals
• Batteries of all kinds
• Fuel, like gasoline and propane
• Asbestos-containing materials

Where these items tend to hide

HHW accumulates in predictable spots: half-used paint cans from a project years ago, a jug of motor oil, under-the-sink cleaners, weed killer in the shed, and pool chemicals in a garage corner. Batteries pile up in kitchen drawers. Asbestos is the trickiest; in older homes it's more likely to be in insulation, floor tile, or popcorn ceilings than in a labeled container.

What can junk haulers take?

Pretty much everything else. Dump Happy takes:

• Appliances: including fridges and freezers, with the refrigerant recovered properly (see appliance removal)
• Electronics: TVs, computers, and monitors, sent to certified e-waste recyclers
• Mattresses and box springs: routed to California mattress recyclers
• Yard waste: branches, brush, and clippings, taken to organics facilities
• Construction debris: wood, drywall, tile, and concrete from small remodels
• General clutter: boxes, shelving, broken tools, exercise equipment, and hot tubs

Can you still clear a garage that has paint or chemicals in it?

Yes. One shelf of old paint doesn't make a whole garage off-limits. Sorting happens item by item, not room by room. Our crews flag anything that falls under HHW rules and set it aside, then clear the shelving, clutter, furniture, and everything else normally. Are refrigerators hazardous waste?

Not in the same sense. Fridges, freezers, and AC units contain refrigerant that has to be recovered by a certified technician before disposal, and we take care of that for you. Read refrigerator disposal rules in California.

What should I do before pickup day?

Mention any hazardous items when you book. It doesn't need to be an exact inventory.
