How does refrigerator haul-away with Dump Happy work?

  1. Send a photo or call. Tell us where the fridge is and whether there are stairs or tight turns.
  2. Get a firm price. A single fridge fits our small load tier, starting at $289. Add a freezer, washer, dryer, or anything else to the same trip.
  3. We disconnect and carry it out. The crew handles the dolly, the doorways, and your floors.
  4. We route it legally. Refrigerant goes to certified recovery, and the steel, copper, and aluminum go to recyclers.

Why can't I just throw away a refrigerator?

Federal Clean Air Act Section 608 requires the refrigerant in fridges, freezers, and AC units to be recovered by a certified technician before the appliance is scrapped, crushed, or landfilled. California enforces this through the Air Resources Board. Disposal sites turn away fridges that haven't been handled properly, so it isn't something you can just drop off. Our post on refrigerator disposal rules in California goes deeper.

Can't I just call the city?

You can try, but a fridge is about the worst possible item to hand to the city:

  • You move a 250-pound appliance to the curb. The city doesn't come inside, disconnect the water line, or bring a dolly.
  • You wait.Bulky item pickup has to be booked ahead and only runs on your collection day. Your fridge sits out front until then, sometimes a week, longer if it's missed.
  • You take on the risk. An old fridge on the curb outside a properly booked pickup is illegal dumping under California Penal Code 374.3, with LA County fines up to $10,000. A fridge with its door attached is also a real danger to kids.
  • Not everyone qualifies. Service depends on your city and who collects your trash.

Won't the store haul it away?

Only if you're buying a new fridge from them, only if you added haul-away when you ordered, and often for an extra fee. Delivery drivers usually require the old unit to be emptied, defrosted, disconnected, and in the same spot as the new one. If your old fridge is in the garage, or you aren't replacing it, they won't take it.

What about utility programs and scrap yards?

Utility recycling programs come and go. LADWP's fridge program was paused for restructuring, and programs like it usually only take working fridges within a size range. Scrap yards often won't accept a fridge until the refrigerant has been recovered, and you still need a truck and a second person to get it there. A dead fridge in the garage doesn't fit any of these. It fits in our truck.

How do I get a fridge ready for pickup?

  1. Empty it completely, including drawers and door shelves.
  2. Unplug it a day ahead so the freezer can defrost, and towel up the water.
  3. Tell us if it has a water line for an ice maker or dispenser.
  4. Mention stairs, tight turns, or a garage location when you book.

Do you also haul freezers and AC units?

Yes. Chest freezers, upright freezers, wine fridges, mini fridges, and window or portable AC units all contain refrigerant and get the same handling. We also haul washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, and water heaters.
